Usually experience counts for something, however when you are trying to obtain over 60 car insurance, this is often not the case. The older generations who have been driving for most of their lives are at a disadvantage when they wish to insure their vehicles.

It all comes down to their age. A lot of insurance companies believe that their age directly relates to their driving ability and base whether or not someone can have an affordable auto insurance policy or not. While statistics do show that minor driving incidents are often caused by senior drivers, some may argue that just as many incidents are caused by younger drivers who get behind the wheel under the influence of drugs and alcohol. It seems to be a known and somewhat accepted prejudice against senior drivers that we’ll all have to deal with sooner or later.

Coupled with high monthly car insurance premiums because of their age, senior drivers are often hit with high premiums because they are at a point in their life when they are able to afford to drive desirable cars. After having worked a lifetime to avoid a luxury such as driving an expensive car, they are then penalized with an increase in insurance premiums – it doesn’t matter so much whether it is male or female car insurance really. In saying this, the opposite can also be true. Seniors who are living on superannuation or government funding find they have to sacrifice certain luxuries to be able to afford to insure their vehicles.

Changing the way insurance companies view over 60 drivers may be difficult. What isn’t is doing your own research to find the best deal and policy for over 60 car insurance for you or your family member.

Ask around friends and family for recommendations. Call around well known insurance companies and do some research into providers specializing in coverage for seniors. With a little bit of time and research you should find an insurance company that supports senior drivers instead of penalizing them. Look for a company that will reward you for your driving record and history of no claims.

Assess your home security including where your car is stored over night. If your vehicle is stored in a locked and secure garage this may mean lower premiums than if it was parked on the street or in your driveway. Ask if having other drivers on your policy such as partners, children or grandchild is affecting your premiums. Chances are it is increasing them so allowing them behind the wheel of your car may be something to reconsider.

If possible make sure that all your insurance policies are held with the same insurer. This can make you eligible for considerable discounts with your premiums. If you need to insure your home, contents, boat and life as well as your car then why not find a company that will reward you for your loyalty with decent premiums, a fair policy and great service.

Believe it or not, if you are looking for over 60 car insurance then there are companies out there who can help you. If you look hard enough you should find an insurer who respects and rewards your experience and driving record.
